....A closer inspection this Jacques
Perrin co-directed and co-written documentary Travelling Birds (or Winged
Migration) sends the low-expectation feathers flying.... Instead of observing
the migratory habits of numerous species of birds merely from the ground
up, Perrin (who is credited with films such as the real bugs' life inspired
"Microcosmos", and "Himalaya") and his vast production team (if you look
at the credits you'll realise that vast is an understatement) have used
an ingenious array of film techniques to create a bird's eye view of what's
happening in the air.
Ever wanted to get a birds perspective
on how things are? Travelling Birds makes this a reality. Using cameras
set up on gliders, remote control flying models and even balloons Travelling
Birds is a visually spectacular three year filming odyssey that takes you
to all four corners of the globe. |

Although the sight of these birds
close up and in flight does impress and the scenery breathtaking it gets
hard not to fall into a slumberous state. Travelling Birds is like a visual
form of relaxation tape. Jacques Perrin luckily adds some ingredients of
drama and humour to get your attention.....
Be shocked back into consciousness
when gunshots ring out and birds once in flight are down and out birds!
Laugh as a group of suspicious and puzzled birds approach what turns out
to be a decoy bird in a waterway! (When one bird gets wind that they've
been set-up it's a case of "lets get the squawk out of here"! Talk about
something out of "Reservoir Ducks"!) |

| But the grand finale has to be
the saddening sight of a befallen seabird, broken wing in tow, desperately
trying to evade the clutches of a predatory and fast moving crab (moving
sideways that is!). It doesn't get pretty when the bird loses it's will
and before you know it pack mentality has set in and there's crabs all
over this poor thing tearing it's carcass to shreds. |

What the classification for Travelling
Birds would have been (it's G rated) if this were a cast of humans and
not birds is anybody's guess!
A critically lauded film (Best
Documentary 2003 Oscars, no less!) Travelling Birds is sure to be pleasurable
viewing for ornithology enthusiasts, subscribers to pay television who're
engrossed with the National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet channels
or just the plain old casual film punter who can appreciate a good documentary
when they see it.... |
