Synopsis
(Opis):
| Ostatni dzień wojny. Poranek pierwszego
dnia pokoju. Pokazać tej szczególnej nocy losy młodego człowieka uwikłanego
w okupacyjną przeszłość, zmęczonego bohaterstwem, przeczuwającego inne,
lepsze życie. Cóż to za piękny temat do filmu. Tej szczególnej nocy spotyka
się przeszłość z przyszłością - i zasiada do jednego stołu. Przy akompaniamencie
tang i fokstrotów bohater filmu, Maciek Chełmicki, szuka odpowiedzi, jak
żyć dalej - jak zrzucić dławiący bagaż przeszłości, rozwiązuje odwieczny
dylemat żołnierza. Słuchać czy myśleć. A jednak Maciek zabije..... Andrzej

| Pierwszy dzień wolności, ostatni
dzień wojny. Maciek Chełmicki, żołnierz AK, ma do wykonania rozkaz. Musi
zastrzelić sekretarza partii, który przyjedzie do miasteczka. Zachodzi
jednak pomyłka i ginie niewinny przypadkowy człowiek. Akcję trzeba powtórzyć
ciągu najbliższych kilkunastu godzin.... W restauracji hotelu
Monopol Maciek poznaję barmankę Krystynę. Spędzona z nią noc, uświadamia
mu bezsens dalszej walki i zabijania, ale poczucie obowiązku wobec przełożonych
jest nadal zbyt silne. Szczuka zostaje zabity, a Chełmicki uciekając trafia
na patrol żołnierzy, którzy próbują go zatrzymać... |

| Rural Poland, on the last day of
World War II. The Nazis have surrendered, and the Red Army has criss-crossed
the country. With the battle against the Nazis over, a new struggle emerges:
the struggle against the Communists. A group of Polish patriots boldly
set out to assassinate a mid-level Communist party functionary. Maciek
is the trigger-man. But when he spots an attractive blonde behind the bar,
his priorities change ...a night spent with her makes him realize the senselessness
of futher killings....... |

| The masterly "Ashes and Diamonds"
(1958) begins as a thriller but a botched assassination attempt triggers
a crisis of confidence in resistance fighter Maciek (Zbigniew Cybulski),
striking at the very heart of what it means to be Polish at a time of national
upheaval. Wajda’s art-school-trained eye ensures constant visual interest:
burning vodka shots symbolise fallen friends, and an effigy of a crucified
Christ dangles upside-down in the ruins of a church. Everything is ambiguous,
including Maciek’s iconic dark glasses: they’re no fashion statement but
a necessary remedy for the eye damage he suffered in the sewers. Although
set at the end of the war, the film’s tone is hardly celebratory: Wajda
knew what was coming next, and while he couldn’t spell too much out, he’d
thoroughly mastered the art of writing between the lines.... this part
